25T
Sustainable design proposal
25 T is the name of the proposal that refers to the 25 tons of cotton used in a very short period of time within the industry, causing The over-exploitation of this raw material, the impact on water scarcity, soil contamination and field sterilization due to monocultures. The times that requires the industry to have cotton results in great social and ethical problems due to the exploitation of agricultural, exposing them a pesticides, which are extremely harmful to your health without equipment or protection necessary for long working hours.
That is why we wanted to reduce the impact o further fine, promote awareness to reduce consumption. Realizing that in order to make a change we must start with ourselves and our mediate circle, CENTER. Only our university generates 80 kg of blanket waste per month (contemplating only what students deposit in recycling bins), which led us to create a recycling system, where we can implement old towels or blanket scraps to create new ones. design systems and/or toiles.
These proposals, despite having been a success, still have a lot to improve, since having several limitations (fabric thread, irregular cuts, ungoverned, etc.) lengthens the design process and the creation of garments. 25T is a good start to reach a sustainable and replicable process. This project starts a conversation about how we can change as an industry and not only worry about labels or that the garments are made of natural elements, but to worry about the impact before, during and after our creations.
I consider change in our industry extremely necessary and it is time that, as creatives, we start with our own processes and look for a way to minimize the damage that we have generated to the environment for years. It is essential to seek and implement sustainable processes that in the same way boost our creativity.
